What Are Implant Dentures?

You may already be familiar with traditional dentures. If so, you know that they rely on natural suction to stay in place in the mouth. While traditional removable dentures are a common way to replace missing teeth, they are not the most comfortable or sturdy option available.

Instead of natural suction, implant dentures are anchored securely in the jawbone by four to six titanium posts called dental implants. These dental implants fuse with the jawbone to provide maximum support for a dental prosthetic, such as dentures. Depending on your unique situation and preferences, we’re proud to offer two different types of implant dentures.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

As their name suggests, this type of implant denture is designed to stay fixed in place permanently, only to be removed by a dentist for routine cleanings. This means you’ll wear your dentures 24/7 as you eat, sleep, and go about your daily life! While this is the sturdiest and most lifelike option, fixed implant dentures typically require more jawbone density than removable implant dentures.

Removable Implant Dentures

Dental implants themselves are not removable, but a denture that they support can be. A removable implant denture can be snapped onto or off the dental implants using special attachments. This allows patients to enjoy all the reliability and strength of an implant denture while still keeping the familiar routine of removing them regularly for cleanings. Typically, removable implant dentures require less jawbone density for placement.

The Implant Denture Procedure

At Dentistry by Brand, we are proud to offer start-to-finish implant treatment! Instead of having to see an outside specialist, you can save time and money by partnering with one of our implant dentists in Garland to restore your smile.

First, you’ll see us for your Initial consultation. Your dentist will carefully examine your teeth and mouth and review your oral and general health history. Once we’ve determined that implant dentures are a good choice for you, we’ll schedule your implant placementsurgery. Unlike other practices, we perform this step right here in our office. Four to six implants will be placed in strategic locations in your jawbone beneath the gums, and then you’ll be sent home for osseointegration.

Over the next few months, the biocompatible implants will fuse with the surrounding bone to create a stable foundation for your dentures. Once you’ve healed, you’ll return for a second minor surgery in which abutments, important connector pieces, are attached to the implant posts. Lastly, it will be time to place your final restoration. Once your implants have fully healed, we will welcome you back so your dentist can securely attach your new dentures onto your dental implants.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You may be an ideal candidate for implant dentures if:

• You have lost most or all your teeth
• You have a thick, strong jawbone
• You are free of gum disease and other oral infections
• You are in fair overall health
• You do not smoke
• You practice excellent oral hygiene at home

Even if you are not the “ideal” candidate, you may still be able to benefit from implant dentures. For example, if your jawbone is not sturdy enough to support dental implants, you may be able to undergo a bone graft procedure to strengthen it.
