You’re considering getting dental implant in Garland, and who could blame you? Many dentists consider this tooth replacement option to be the most advanced solution to date. There’s just one problem: you’re not sure if you’d make a good candidate.

That’s a valid concern, so don’t worry – this post will go over why you might need some preliminary work before you can receive implants. Read patiently, because it might be easier for you to qualify than you think!

Factors That Can Complicate a Dental Implant Treatment

The main reasons why you might not be a good candidate for dental implants – at least initially – is that you have a condition that could cause the implants to fail. After all, these restorations aren’t exactly cheap, and it’s important to set your treatment up for success!

Factor 1: Gum Disease

If you have an active case of gum disease, your dentist will insist on getting that treated before proceeding with the dental implant process. As gum disease progresses, it can cause your implants to come loose and fall out.

Factor 2: Other Oral Health Conditions

Other oral health conditions, like cavities in any remaining teeth or infection, can also present problems for dental implants. Basically, if it could cause you to lose a tooth, it could cause your implants to fail!

Factor 3: Not Enough Jawbone Mass

Unlike dentures, dental implants are primarily supported by your jawbone (and your gums, but mostly your jawbone). If your jawbone is too thin or too weak to hold your implants in place, that’s another factor that could lead to implant loss.

Fortunately, your dentist can remedy many of these issues. Don’t count yourself out until you’ve had a talk with your dental team!

Factors That Can Make You a Good Candidate

For the most part, you should be able to qualify for a dental implant treatment if you have good oral health and are willing to commit to a consistent oral hygiene routine. Since implants fit like natural teeth, there’s not anything “extra” you’ll have to do to maintain them. Simply brushing your teeth twice per day, flossing at least once daily, and visiting your dentist on a biannual basis will help keep them clean and free from harmful bacteria.

Remember, if you find that you don’t qualify for dental implants upfront, your dentist can likely provide solutions that will promote a successful treatment. As long as you take care of your smile and think the lengthy placement process will be worth it, dental implants could very well be the tooth replacement for you!
